Last week, I’ve been laid off from my job, effective January 6, 2025.
The timing was ironic—it came right after a successful project launch onsite. Hearing this from my Lead left me with two choices:
Deny
Accept
I chose acceptance.
A Weekend to Reflect
Instead of rushing to “fix” things, I decided to dedicate my weekend to:
Resting
Processing my emotions
Creating
Doing nothing but laying on the grass, staring at our trees as leaves fell on my face
It felt like being in another dimension.
The Birth of MAELIAS
During this time, an idea was born: MAELIAS—a company that blends the creativity and skills of m(a)e and my husband, Elias.
“Indra, what do you think of MAELIAS?” I asked my son.
“Sounds like… alien!” he replied.
“Well then, I guess the company we’re building will be out of this world!”
His response? “Good luck with that.”
Challenge accepted, my dear one.
Then he went back to playing Zooba to unlock Level 9 and get the character: Steve.
2024: The Year of Lessons
I’ve been hearing and learning these:
Create more than you consume.
Life is like a video game—once you master one level, you’re ready to move up.
F*** your mood. Get up, drink water, grab a pen, and write.
Always choose to live in love, not in fear.
Falling Branches, Rising Ideas
Right before leaving for the airport on 11/10, strong winds in Jersey caused branches of our pine tree to fall. Instead of seeing it as a mess, my husband and I saw an opportunity:
What if we turned those branches, leaves, and pine cones into a center table?
We collected them, and when I returned early Friday, the house smelled like Christmas—pine scents everywhere. From this:
…my husband arranged them to become this:
The song, “It’s beginning to look (and smell) a lot like Christmas” started playing in my head.
With snacks in hand, my husband and I brainstormed about our Products and Services, Saturday afternoon. We both love to create, we’ve been employed in the service industry all our adult life, and so we joined forces and came up with this list.
*for those with sharp eyes, yes, I misspelled “guitar.” :)
Now, I feel excited to create our website and all things tech, while my husband handles the products side of our business.
Weeks of Continued Commitment
I still have 7 more weeks with my current project. What’s funny and ironic is that, I finally feel like I belong - working with an incredible team of leads, trainers and client contacts. Until my last day, I remain committed to:
Crafting efficient and inspiring systems
Ensuring harmony and brilliance
Delivering impactful solutions
Looking Ahead
Retiring from Corporate America at age 45 isn’t bad at all. A friend of mine shared, "if they close the door, create your window and build your own skyway."
That’s exactly what I’m doing with MAELIAS.
While I feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty, I’m ready to embrace this new path with an open heart, mind and spirit.
Realizations from the Weekend
Here’s what I realized while spending time with Elias and Indra:
We deserve to feel good no matter what.
When you focus on abundance, it’s easy to assume it will come through winning the lottery or landing a better job. In reality, abundance can show up in countless unexpected ways.
There’s always something to admire in others and always something to disagree with. It’s up to us to decide what we focus on.
If you feel confident in your own values and trust in life, there's no need to expect others to think or act the same way you do.
While you may not control politics, markets, job security, healthcare systems, or global events, you can control how you respond.
Final Thoughts
Life threw a curveball, but it also opened a door to new possibilities.
For now, I’m embracing this transition with curiosity, gratitude, and a bit of cosmic wonder.
Here’s to building our own skyways!
